Ecommerce Category Page Design: Product Listings, Filters and Sorting

How to design category and product listing pages: product cards, filters and facets, sorting, loading more products, mobile filtering and empty results.

Quick answer

A good category or product listing page helps shoppers narrow a large range down to a shortlist quickly. Design informative product cards, offer filters that match how shoppers choose in each category (with counts and easy removal), provide sensible sorting, load more products efficiently (Baymard's testing generally favors a "Load more" button over pagination or infinite scroll), make filtering easy on mobile, and never dead-end shoppers when filters return nothing.

The Listing Page's Job

Shoppers arrive at category pages with partial intent: they know the type of product, not the exact one. The page should help them compare, narrow and choose what to view. See Baymard's overview of product listing page UX for research-backed detail; this guide covers design decisions, and the Shopify collection page audit covers auditing a live Shopify store.

Category, filters, sort, product cards, load more, product page: narrowing a range to a decision.

Product Cards

Cards should let shoppers compare without opening every product: a consistent, clear image (ideally with an alternate view on hover or swipe), name, price, and one or two key differentiators such as available colors, rating or a defining attribute. Keep cards consistent so the eye can scan the grid.

Filters and Facets

Filters are the main tool for narrowing. Choose filter types per category: fit and size for apparel, specifications for electronics, skin type for skincare. Show counts, allow combining filters, show applied filters prominently with one-tap removal, and order filter groups by importance. Baymard's filter UI guidance covers these patterns in detail.

Sorting

Offer common sort options (relevance or featured, price both directions, newest, rating) and choose a default that suits the category. Make the current sort visible. Sorting complements filtering; it doesn't replace it.

Loading More Products

MethodStrengthsWeaknesses
PaginationClear position, easy to returnFeels slow; small tap targets on mobile
Infinite scrollEffortless browsingCan overwhelm; footer hard to reach; position lost
Load more buttonUser control with continuous browsingNeeds sensible batch sizes and lazy loading

What Baymard Found

Baymard's testing of loading methods found "Load more" generally performed best: users perceived pagination as slow and were discouraged by many page links, while endless scrolling could overwhelm them. Combining a load more button with lazy loading lets pages show larger batches without the performance cost.

Mobile Filtering

On mobile, filters usually open in a full-screen or bottom sheet. Keep selections visible, show how many products will result, and provide clear apply and reset buttons. Show applied filters as removable chips above the grid. Offer a one- or two-column grid depending on how visual the products are.

Category Structure and Navigation

Listing pages depend on a sound taxonomy: categories and attributes that match shoppers' language and product data clean enough to filter. See information architecture and the ecommerce website design guide.

Empty and No-Result States

When filters leave no products, say which filters caused it and offer to remove them, suggest related categories, and keep the shopper moving. The same applies to search results pages.

Category Page Checklist

  • Product cards show image, name, price and key differentiators
  • Filters match how shoppers choose in this category
  • Filter counts shown; applied filters visible and removable
  • Sensible default sort with common alternatives
  • Load more with lazy loading rather than heavy pagination
  • Mobile filters in an easy panel with apply and reset
  • Helpful no-results state
  • Fast image loading and stable layout

Conclusion

Category pages succeed when shoppers can narrow quickly and confidently: informative cards, relevant filters, useful sorting, efficient loading and mobile-friendly controls. Pair them with strong product pages to complete the path to purchase.
