Before you install another Shopify app, check these five things

App bloat is the most common reason Shopify stores slow down. A practical checklist to run before adding the next tool to your stack.

Apps are the easiest thing to add and the hardest thing to remove

Every Shopify app adds its own scripts, and most stores never go back to remove the ones they stopped needing. Over time, this quietly compounds into a slow storefront.

The checklist

Run through these before installing anything new:

  • Does this app duplicate something a current app or your theme already does?
  • Does it load on every page, or only where it is needed?
  • Is there a lightweight or native alternative?
  • Will removing it later be simple, or will it leave code behind?
  • Is the value it adds measurable, or assumed?
Every app on the storefront is another script the browser has to load first.

Audit before you add

Before adding a new app, it is worth spending twenty minutes auditing what is currently installed. Most stores we review are running two or three apps doing overlapping jobs.

FAQ

Common questions

There's no fixed number — a store with ten well-chosen, lightweight apps can be faster than one with three bloated ones. The question isn't how many, it's whether each one is still earning its place.
