The Shopify apps worth installing when you're starting out
Most new stores install too many apps too early. Here is how to think about the first app stack by category, not by "best of" lists.
Skip the "best apps" list, start with categories
Ranked lists of the "best" Shopify apps go stale quickly and tend to reward whichever app markets itself best, not whichever fits your store. A more durable approach is to think in categories: what job needs doing, what a good app in that category looks like, and whether you actually need it yet.
For a store that hasn't launched or has just launched, three categories consistently earn their place early: email and SMS marketing, reviews and social proof, and analytics you'll actually look at. Everything past that should be added in response to a specific, observed need.
The categories worth prioritizing early
Email and SMS marketing tools — well-known examples include Klaviyo and Omnisend — turn one-time visitors into a list you can market to directly, and even a simple welcome and abandoned-cart flow tends to pay for itself quickly. Reviews and social proof apps, such as Judge.me or Yotpo, build the trust signals new stores lack by default, and are worth installing before your first order so you can start requesting reviews immediately.
Beyond those two, most new stores are well served by Shopify's own built-in analytics and email tools before reaching for a third-party alternative — native tools cover the basics well and add nothing to your app count.
What to add later, once you have order volume
Subscription and membership apps, loyalty and rewards programs, and advanced upsell or bundling tools all make more sense once you have enough order volume to optimize — installing them before that point usually means configuring a feature with no real usage to learn from. The same is true for currency conversion and multi-market apps, which matter far more once international traffic is a meaningful share of your visitors than on day one.
Pro tip
A good test before installing any app: can you name the specific metric you expect it to move? If not, it's not ready to be installed yet.
Every app you install is a decision you'll eventually revisit
Apps are easy to add and, in practice, rarely removed — which is exactly how stores end up with overlapping tools and unnecessary script weight a year in. Before installing anything new, it's worth checking what's already running against our Shopify app audit checklist, and understanding how integrations actually connect to your store in our app and API integration guide.

Common questions
Fewer than feels intuitive — usually a small handful covering the categories that directly affect revenue: email marketing, reviews or social proof, and basic analytics. Every additional app should solve a problem you've actually observed, not one you're anticipating.
