BOPIS Ecommerce: How to Build Buy Online, Pick Up in Store

How to build BOPIS: store availability, store selection, reservations, order routing, picking, notifications, handover, store operations and the customer experience.

Quick answer

BOPIS lets customers buy online and collect from a store. It needs accurate store inventory shown online with an honest ready time, reservation of stock when the order is placed, routing of the order to the chosen store, a picking and holding process, notifications for ready, reminders and expiry, and a quick handover that verifies the collector. Decide in advance what happens when items are missing, and design store staffing and space before launch.

Where This Fits

This article covers the system and operations. Customer-facing design is covered in click and collect UX, stock in retail inventory visibility and returns in store in BORIS. The wider strategy is in omnichannel ecommerce.

The BOPIS Flow

Product Availability

Store stock is less accurate than warehouse stock because of shrinkage, misplaced items and unrecorded movements. Show pickup availability only when available-to-promise is above a safety threshold, use clear states (available today, available in two days, not available here), and confirm availability again at checkout.

Store Selection

Let customers choose a store by location, remember the choice, show pickup availability and ready time per store, and offer nearby alternatives when items are unavailable. See store locator UX.

Reservations and Order Routing

Reserve stock when the order is placed so it cannot be sold twice. The OMS routes the order to the chosen store, and if the store cannot fulfil (stock missing, capacity), applies fallback rules: transfer from another store, ship to the customer, or cancel lines with refunds. See order management.

Start a Project

Store Picking and Holding

  • Orders appear on a store device with priority and due time
  • Pick lists organized by store layout
  • Scan items to confirm the right product and variant
  • Record exceptions (missing, damaged) immediately
  • Stage orders in a labelled holding area
  • Mark ready only when every line is staged

Notifications

MessageContent

ReminderBefore the hold period ends

Handover

Handover should take a minute or two. Verify the order with a code or order number and, for higher-value items, identification. Support an alternative collector named at checkout where policy allows. Offer an 'I'm here' option for curbside or busy stores. Record collection so the order closes in every system.

Payment Considerations

Paying online reduces no-shows and till work. Card authorizations may expire before collection for longer holds; plan capture timing with your payment provider. Refund promptly for cancelled or uncollected orders.

Store Operations

BOPIS is a store process as much as a feature. Plan staffing for peak pickup times, a holding area with enough space, devices, training and incentives that credit stores for online orders they fulfil.

Measuring BOPIS

  • Time from order to ready
  • Fill rate without changes
  • Customer wait at handover
  • No-show and expiry rates
  • Cancellations due to stock
  • Customer satisfaction after pickup

Worked Example

An illustrative scenario, not a client case: a home improvement retailer launches pickup and finds a high share of orders need changes because items cannot be found on the shelf. Analysis shows most failures are small items in a few departments. The team raises safety stock for those categories, adds scan-to-confirm picking, and sends customers an exception message with options before marking orders ready. Customers stop arriving to incomplete orders.

Common Mistakes

  • Showing store stock without safety buffers
  • No reservation at order placement
  • Ready notices sent before orders are staged
  • No plan for missing items
  • Long queues at a shared till
  • Store teams not credited for online orders

Conclusion

BOPIS works when stock is accurate, orders are reserved and routed reliably, stores pick and hold to a clear routine and handover is fast. Related: click and collect UX and inventory visibility.

FAQ

Common questions

Buy online, pick up in store: the customer orders and usually pays online, the store prepares the order from its stock, and the customer collects it at the store.
