Shopify Agentic Commerce: How AI Shopping Can Change Product Discovery

How Shopify's Agentic Storefronts, Shopify Catalog and UCP tooling work: channels, eligibility, checkout, data mapping, exclusions, attribution and preparation.

Quick answer

Shopify's agentic commerce tools let eligible stores sell through AI assistants without building integrations. Agentic Storefronts makes products available in channels Shopify lists as ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, AI Mode in Google Search, the Gemini app and Meta, using Shopify Catalog; it's active by default for eligible stores and managed in Sales channels > Agentic. Some channels support direct checkout; ChatGPT sends shoppers to your checkout. You keep the customer and see orders attributed by channel. Visibility depends on complete, accurate product data.

The Pieces

Details below come from Shopify's Help Center, blog and developer documentation, checked in September 2026. Channel availability changes often.

PieceWhat it does
Agentic StorefrontsSales channel that makes products available in AI assistants
Shopify CatalogShopify's product index used by AI channels; keeps price and inventory updated
Shopify Catalog MappingMaps product data stored in metafields or metaobjects
Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) toolingLets developers build agents that search the Catalog, build carts and checkouts, and track orders
Agentic planLets brands on other platforms list in Shopify Catalog

Channels and Availability

Shopify's documentation describes different reach per channel: ChatGPT and Copilot are available to merchants selling to US buyers regardless of where the store is based, while AI Mode and Gemini were open to US-based stores selling to US customers, with a broader rollout underway. Products reach Google's surfaces through Shopify Catalog or the Google & YouTube channel and Merchant Center (Shopify Help Center, Shopify).

Eligibility

  • A paid Shopify plan
  • An unlocked (not password-protected) storefront
  • Completed store policies
  • Products with a title, at least one image and a price
  • Shipping to eligible regions
  • Agreement to Shopify's Agentic Storefronts supplemental terms

Worth noting

These requirements are summarized from Shopify's published guidance and may change. Check the Help Center before relying on them.

Checkout: Direct or on Your Store

According to Shopify's documentation, ChatGPT customers complete purchases on your store's checkout, while Google AI Mode, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta support direct checkout when activated; with direct checkout off, shoppers are redirected to your store. On the Agentic plan, direct checkout is off by default. Either way, you retain the customer relationship and post-purchase experience, and orders are attributed to their AI channel.

Product Data Is the Lever

Shopify lists products in AI channels with their title, description, options, images, price, availability and other key attributes. If important information lives in metafields or metaobjects, such as materials, dimensions or compatibility, use Shopify Catalog Mapping so it reaches the Catalog (Shopify Help Center).

FieldImprove by
TitleProduct type and the attribute shoppers ask about
DescriptionSpecific facts, uses and what's included; no vague copy
Options and variantsConsistent names and values (Size, Colour)
MetafieldsMap materials, dimensions, compatibility, ingredients
ImagesClear, accurate, variant-specific
PoliciesComplete shipping and returns policies; see trust optimization

Controlling What Appears

You can switch individual AI channels on or off in Sales channels > Agentic. Setting a product to Unlisted hides it from AI channels but also from sitemaps and search engines. Products in B2B catalogs, behind customer login or on password-protected storefronts are excluded automatically. Shopify notes that opting out of a channel may not remove products surfaced through other external discovery methods.

Measuring Results

Orders from AI channels are attributed in the Shopify admin. Compare them by channel with conversion, order value, returns and support contacts, and watch catalog diagnostics for products that aren't eligible. See Shopify analytics.

For Developers: Building Agents on Shopify

Shopify's developer documentation describes how agents can authenticate, search the Global Catalog or a single storefront, build carts and checkouts, hand off to the merchant for payment and monitor orders using UCP and UCP-compliant MCP servers, with trust tiers controlling capabilities; some APIs are in early access (Shopify developer docs). This matters if you're building your own shopping assistant, not for enabling Agentic Storefronts. See Shopify custom app development.

Preparation Checklist

  • Review Sales channels > Agentic and choose channels deliberately
  • Complete store policies
  • Rewrite vague titles and descriptions with specific facts
  • Standardize option names and values
  • Map key metafields with Shopify Catalog Mapping
  • Check images, pricing, inventory and shipping accuracy
  • Decide direct checkout per channel
  • Track AI channel orders, returns and support

Conclusion

Shopify has made selling through AI assistants a setting rather than an integration project for eligible stores. The work that makes a difference is the same work that improves search, feeds and conversion: accurate, complete product data and clear policies.
