Shopify Plus vs. Shopify: which is right for a growing business?

Shopify Plus is not simply "Shopify for big companies." Here is what it actually unlocks, and the operational signals that make it worth the upgrade.

"Shopify for big companies" is the wrong mental model

Shopify Plus is often described as the enterprise tier, which makes it sound like a general upgrade for businesses that have simply gotten bigger. In practice, it unlocks a specific set of operational capabilities — B2B scale, checkout customization, multi-store management — and it's worth evaluating against those specific capabilities, not against company size alone.

This matters because Shopify has moved core B2B functionality onto standard plans over time, which means the gap between Shopify and Shopify Plus is narrower and more specific than it used to be — and worth understanding precisely before paying for the upgrade.

Where the two actually differ

Standard plans now cover meaningful ground on their own:

CapabilityStandard Shopify (Basic/Grow/Advanced)Shopify Plus
B2B company accounts, quantity rulesIncludedIncluded
B2B catalogsUp to 3, combined across marketsUnlimited, assignable per company
Checkout customizationStandard checkout settings onlyFull checkout extensibility

When regular Shopify is enough

If your B2B needs fit within three catalogs, your checkout doesn't need custom logic beyond what native settings and Shopify Functions on your current plan support, and you're running a single storefront, standard Shopify — properly built — covers real operational needs at a fraction of the cost.

When Shopify Plus becomes worth considering

Plus earns its cost when you hit a concrete limit — more than three B2B catalogs, a checkout experience that needs custom fields or logic native settings can't provide, multiple storefronts you need to manage as one organization, or order volume that genuinely benefits from priority support and higher API limits. It's a upgrade justified by specific, current operational needs, not by anticipated future scale.

Plus is also where a headless storefront most often gets seriously discussed, since the API limits and infrastructure it includes are what a custom frontend tends to need at real scale. That's a separate decision worth its own evaluation — see our guide to headless Shopify before assuming the two upgrades belong together.

Pro tip

List the specific Plus-only feature your business needs right now before evaluating the upgrade. If you can't name one, you're probably not ready for it yet.

Common questions

Unlimited B2B catalogs, checkout extensibility for building fully custom checkout experiences, a dedicated B2B storefront, deposits and partial payments, several included expansion stores, unlimited staff accounts, and priority support — standard plans now include core B2B functionality like company accounts and quantity rules, but with meaningful limits Plus removes.
